Before now, I have never had much interaction with blogs. Sure, I’ve visited websites with them, but I had never written one myself. Media holds such a strong grip on our lives in the modern day, especially here in the United States. We are constantly consuming information from all sorts of outlets: news media, social media, television, video games, movies, and many more. I am very interested in how this class will change my perception of the messages I consume on a daily basis. I strive to be an informed citizen, not only about current events, but also what my friends are doing. Therefore, I want to be more efficient in consuming media from many different sources.
So far, this class has made me realize that I need to engage in my personal locus more and try to stop the mindless scrolling I do on a daily basis. By improving my media literacy, I hope to consume media in a more analytical fashion. Rather than just reading something and storing the information in my brain, I want to question it and ask “why” more. The textbook for this class seems like a really great resource so far. I can look in it for information and not be bored with it like many other textbooks. I enjoy reading things that are very pertinent to my life.
This is my first communications/mass communications class, and I look forward to improving myself through this class and becoming a more well-rounded student. Throughout this class, I hope to improve on myself both as a consumer and a writer. As a nursing major, all of my writing in other classes is very scientific, professional, and objective. I look forward to writing my personal opinions and getting creative with them through this blog. I appreciate the outlet given to us to express ourselves.
